When does Frontier Waste Solutions start service in McKinney?
Starting Monday, Sept. 30, McKinney will switch to a new trash and recycling contractor for everyone who pays for these services through the city. Frontier Waste Solutions will handle trash, recycling, yard waste, and bulky item pickups.
If you only have a City of McKinney water account or don’t live within city limits, this service contractor won’t cover you.

- Make sure your gray cart(s) are out by 7 a.m. on collection day. You can set them out as early as 6 p.m. the evening before.
- Place your carts at least three feet away from anything else like other carts, mailboxes, cars, utility meters, fences, and so on.
- All your trash needs to be inside the gray cart with the lid shut. Anything left outside the cart won’t be picked up.
- The side of the cart with the serial number should be facing the street.
- Make sure everything inside is bagged and the lid is fully closed to avoid spills.
- If the cart is overloaded, it won’t be collected.
- After storms or strong winds, you’re responsible for putting your carts back in position and getting any spilled trash back into the cart before pickup.
If your trash, recycling, or yard waste isn’t picked up, leave your carts out until serviced or until 7 p.m. on Saturday. If it hasn’t been collected by then, it’s considered a missed pick-up. Any missed routes will be taken care of during the normal collection the following week.
Trash and recycling collection will not be provided on the following holidays (actual holidays, not federally observed holidays):
- New Year’s Day – Jan 1*
- Memorial Day – May 27, 2024
- Independence Day – Jul 4*
- Labor Day – Sep 2, 2024

Here’s how cart orders work:
Additional Carts:
- You must keep any extra carts for at least 6 months, and there’s a fee for each additional cart.
- For more info on extra disposal options, visit the Residential Trash Services page on McKinneyTexas.org/Trash.
- Expect delivery of additional carts within 1–2 business days.
- You’ll get a confirmation email with delivery details, so don’t forget to check your junk or spam folders. If you don’t get an email, delivery wasn’t scheduled, and you’ll need to submit your request again.
- Fees apply for adding more carts.
Damaged Carts & Extra Cart Removal:
- Requests to remove or replace a cart must be scheduled for the business day following your trash collection day.
- Be sure to submit next-business-day requests by 12 p.m. (noon) on your collection day.
- You’ll receive a confirmation email for removal or replacement. Check your junk or spam folders, and if you don’t get an email, you’ll need to resubmit the request.
- All carts should be empty and placed curbside by 7 a.m. on the scheduled day. If not, you’ll need to resubmit, and a $25 missed appointment fee will apply.
- Damaged carts are replaced free if the damage is from normal wear and tear. However, if it’s from negligence (e.g., fire or abuse), you’ll be charged $75 per cart.
Submit a Request
To add or remove a cart, report damage, or request a missing cart, just fill out the Cart Order Form online. Your water account needs to be current for orders to be processed.
Residents can schedule a bulky item collection up to 12 times a year, free of charge.
However, if you own rental property, it’s considered commercial, so landlords or property owners can’t request this service for rentals.
Here’s how it works:
- Bulky items are only collected by appointment.
- You must submit your request before 12 p.m. on the business day before your collection day.
To schedule a pick-up, you’ll need to Request Bulky Item Collection in advance.

What counts as a bulky item?
- Bulky items are large things that won’t fit in your gray trash cart.

Here’s what you need to know about disposing of medications:
Do NOT flush or pour unwanted meds down the drain.
Throwing unused, expired, or unwanted medications in the trash or flushing them can harm the environment and potentially create serious issues.
Why does it matter?
- Flushed meds can end up in lakes, rivers, and streams, affecting water quality.
- Studies show that even low levels of pharmaceuticals in the water can change the behavior and health of fish and other aquatic life.
- Medications enter wastewater from several sources, including flushing them.
- Meds left in your home for long periods are more likely to be misused or abused. Most abused prescription drugs are taken from family or friends, often from the home medicine cabinet.
- Long-term exposure to low doses of medications like antibiotics may lead to drug-resistant bacteria and microbes, which is a growing health risk.
Safe Disposal Options:
- Drug Take-Back Events: The Police Department holds these events twice a year, usually in April and October.
- DEA Collection Locations: You can find a nearby collection location by visiting the DEA’s website and entering your zip code.
- Medical City McKinney: Located at 4500 Medical Center Dr., they have a DEA-compliant drug take-back box in their ER lobby.
- Walgreens Pharmacy: The store at 1651 W. University Dr. has a secure take-back receptacle near the pharmacy counter.
Note: Sharps (like needles) aren’t considered medication, so you’ll need to follow separate guidelines for disposing of those.
If you prefer to drop off items for disposal yourself, there are six locations in the metroplex that accept drop-offs.
Things to Know Before You Go:
- Only acceptable waste from residents is allowed at North Texas Municipal Water District (NTMWD) facilities.
- You’ll need to bring a valid Texas driver’s license and a City of McKinney water bill dated within the last 30 days. The address on your license must match the one on your water bill.
- You get two free visits per household per month.
- If you’re driving a truck or trailer to the landfill or transfer station, make sure you have a tarp or cover for your load. You won’t be allowed to enter without this.
- If you’re using a dump trailer, stake bed truck, or box truck, you’ll need to pay for disposal services.

The McKinney City Council has put in place solid waste ordinances to set clear standards for both commercial and residential customer services. These rules aim to cut down on litter, protect local waterways, maintain property values, and safeguard the health and well-being of the community.
If there’s non-compliance with these ordinances, the city can take enforcement actions to ensure everyone follows the guidelines.
