Speaker1: [00:00:03] Frontier Waste Solutions extends their impact far beyond simply being Goodwill’s partner in waste management.
Bill Killian: [00:00:10] I look for win wins. I want to help goodwill be the best because then vis a vis, that’s going to help our company be the best.
Speaker1: [00:00:17] A notable example of this was in early 2022.
Bill Killian: [00:00:20] There was and is an issue in corpus with illegal dumping, and unfortunately, several goodwill sites bear the brunt of that.
Speaker1: [00:00:31] Frontier Waste Solutions Vice President Bill Killian arranged a pivotal meeting with goodwill and the City of Corpus Christi Solid Waste Department.
Speaker3: [00:00:39] So in the name Frontier Waste Solutions, they have the word solution. And they’ve been really great at coming up with great solutions to help us handle some of the things that come through our stores that we don’t know how to handle, whether it’s waste materials, cardboard, recycling through computers, or even metal, Frontier Waste Solutions has continuously met us at the table to give us options on how to handle these problems.
Speaker1: [00:01:01] Where some people see problems, Bill sees solutions. And in this day of never ending emails and texts, he brings his own technology to the table.
Bill Killian: [00:01:09] Somebody says, we have an app at our company called the F to F app face to face. Get in front of someone and talk. Dialogue is a good thing.
Speaker1: [00:01:21] A vast array of donations come to goodwill every day. Recyclable items are separated and sold, generating revenue for goodwill operations and training programs. But disposing the mountain of items that have no resale value is a huge challenge.
Speaker3: [00:01:35] At our retail operations center, we have a lot of waste that comes through from all of our stores into a central location. So what ends up happening with a lot of the waste is it’ll end up filling a container very quick, and as a result, we have to call Bill 2 or 3 times a day to come pick up our trash. Bill Killian and Frontier Waste Solutions came to us with the option of a new compactor at that facility.
Bill Killian: [00:01:58] On the safety side, it’s easier to load, but more importantly, it helps mitigate extra costs because where the compactor box is hauled and taken away once, it would take three open top boxes. So it’s a 3 to 1 compaction ratio. So there’s a savings there in that regard.
Speaker4: [00:02:19] It’s time for the 35th annual Goodwill Run presented by Frontier Waste Solutions.
Speaker1: [00:02:25] Since 2019, Frontier Waste Solutions has been a key supporter of Goodwill’s initiatives, particularly as the title sponsor of the annual goodwill run.
Bill Killian: [00:02:35] One of our employees, Juan Bonilla, who actually services the Rock, he’s the most fit, solid waste trash collection provider in the United States of America, and I’m always proud to know that when he enters, he wins. So that’s another reason that we’re proud to be in the race.
Speaker1: [00:02:55] Bill’s relationship with goodwill goes back well over a decade. He strongly believes in Goodwill’s mission to help people become independent through employment.
Bill Killian: [00:03:04] I was raised that hard work is a virtue, and hard work will get you through anything. And I’m here to tell you it’s true. And a gentleman from Alice, Texas, was put in a position with goodwill to get his CDL license. And as a person whose life was changed at age 24 by getting his CDL license, when I was able to get a truck driving job, turned my life around, and I knew watching that video that that man’s life was forever changed by that license. So I know that that work is going on 365 days a year at goodwill, and I think that’s an awesome thing.
Speaker1: [00:03:40] Bill was fortunate enough to have strong role models instill the value of hard work.
Bill Killian: [00:03:44] You can come to my office and there’s a plaque on the wall that my grandfather got when he was retiring. He worked 51 years. Hold on. He started when he was 12, in 1921. That’s hard work.
Speaker1: [00:04:03] And to anyone who wonders what the secret to success is, Bill says it’s really no secret.
Bill Killian: [00:04:09] The solid waste business never stops. It never stops. So we tell our people attendance and getting there and having the discipline to show up. If you do that and you do that without fail, I can almost guarantee that you’re going to be successful because you’ll learn all the things that we need to teach you about safety and customer service. Those things will come as as you’re there to learn it, but you have to get there. And so showing up and being present is about the number one thing in our industry.
Speaker1: [00:04:41] Bill and his team has done just that, showing up every day, delivering on their commitment to supporting goodwill and building a stronger community. Congratulations to Frontier Waste Solutions 2023 Goodwill Champion of the year.
