Pecans down on Dairy Farm Road: the 2025 storms
On the evening of May 18, 2025, a brief EF-1 tornado with peak winds of 105 mph touched down north of Mingus, NOAA’s survey says, uprooting very large pecan trees along Dairy Farm Road and ripping sheet metal off a shed. Minutes later, by the same records, a second EF-1 formed north of Gordon and moved into that town, peeling metal panels off roofs and leaving some homes with holes in them. NOAA logged roof damage to metal buildings on Dairy Farm Road again on June 8, and the City Council’s July 9 minutes note that limbs cut on Grafton and Pecan after the storm needed to be picked up. Then on September 21, NOAA notes, the front entrance of a building in Mingus collapsed inward and the glass in its front windows blew out.
Torn tin, shingles and decking go in a roll-off sized for a storm-stripped roof. A mixed pile of limbs and fencing is 40-yard work; storm debris is one of the jobs printed on that card.

Trash service in Mingus runs through City Hall, and the City’s own rules spell out how:
- Chapter 4.03 of the City code has every occupied premises subscribe to the City’s authorized collection service unless the Council grants an exemption.
- The City’s 2026 Water Contract and Service Agreement says the City uses Frontier Waste Solutions for pickup and adds carts and dumpsters to the monthly water bill.
- Section 7.02.002 of the code calls for lidded, rodent-resistant containers, set out no earlier than 6 p.m. the evening before collection and brought back in within 24 hours after service.

The Handbook counts 1,110 people in Mingus in 1920 and 1930, and the Census Bureau estimated 250 on July 1, 2025.

What Palo Pinto County's 2026 burn order banned
Inside Mingus, Section 7.04.003 of the City code bans burning household waste and allows open burning only when state rules permit it. Out in the county, the Commissioners Court went further in August 2026: its Phase 2 order of August 10 prohibited the outdoor use of combustible materials anywhere in unincorporated Palo Pinto County, and field welders had to clear vegetation 25 feet in every direction. The County lifted that order at 11:30 a.m. on October 5, 2026. The City’s new-resident page still asks anyone planning a burn to call the Sheriff’s Office first, at 940-659-2085.
The county knows what a runaway fire costs. The Hohertz fire started in April 2011 about 9 miles northwest of Strawn, NOAA’s records show, and merged into the PK Complex, which burned 126,734 acres and destroyed 167 homes. Old furniture, lumber and shop junk from a cleanout ride out in a roll-off rather than up in smoke.

Who picks up household trash in Mingus?
Frontier does, under the City's contract. The City Council's April 9, 2025 minutes record that the City's previous hauler sold its business to Frontier Waste and that the City's contract stayed in place. Since December 1, 2025, the City says, trash goes out on Monday, with bulk collection on the first Monday of the month; call City Hall at 254-672-5995 for bulk pickup or to start service. Can I bring trash from my place outside Mingus and dump it in town?
Not without the Council's permission. Section 7.02.004 of the City code prohibits hauling refuse in from outside the city limits to dump in Mingus unless the Council authorizes it, and any private hauling has to be in a vehicle built to keep the load from spilling. A roll-off set at your own property, in town or out in the county, avoids the problem.
Does new construction in Mingus need a City permit?
Yes. The City's permits page says any new construction needs a permit from the City of Mingus, a building permit starts with a current survey, and the City follows the 2015 International codes, effective September 19, 2016. The Council's April 2025 minutes add a pre-construction permit that includes an inspection. Check with City Hall before the first load of framing scraps hits the container.
