Nearly all of Galveston Island sits inside the city limits, from the East End’s historic blocks west to San Luis Pass, and Pelican Island belongs to the city too. On the island we work for contractors, property managers and businesses, bringing 20 to 40-yard roll-offs to commercial jobs and setting 2 to 8-yard bins at restaurants, hotels and shops. Across Bolivar Roads, the unincorporated Bolivar Peninsula can book roll-offs for homes and job sites alike.

How a Frontier drop works

  1. 1

    Tell us the job

What’s going in the container, and where it has to sit.

  2. 2

    Get the right size

Heavy debris like shingles and concrete goes in a smaller box. Bulky junk goes in a bigger one.

  3. 3

    We set it down

On firm, level ground with a clear approach for the truck.

  4. 4

    Call when it’s full

We haul it away and handle the disposal.

What Galveston's demolition permit asks for

Tearing down any building in Galveston, commercial or residential, takes a demolition permit from the City’s Building Division, and the application lists what has to be settled first:

Historic review. In a historic district such as the East End, Silk Stocking, Lost Bayou or Strand/Mechanic, the San Jacinto Neighborhood Conservation District or the Height and Density Development Zone, a demolition has to clear the Landmark Commission or the Historic Preservation Officer.

An asbestos survey that meets the Texas Asbestos Health Protection Rules and the federal NESHAP standards.

The utility cutoff. A master plumber disconnects sewer and water at the property line, and the sewer disconnect is permitted, inspected and finaled before anyone asks for the demolition permit.

Once the walls are down, the permit calls for all construction material to leave the jobsite, foundation included unless the Building Official approves an exception, and for the lot to be left level and free of debris. Frontier lists the 40-yard for demolition and the 20-yard for concrete and bricks; here’s how big each roll-off runs.

When a Galveston business outgrows City carts

The City’s commercial collection is built on carts: two per business, emptied once a week, and four at most unless the director of solid waste waives the limit, under Section 15-26 of the City code. Section 15-6 keeps City trash service away from the Galveston Wharves area, from ships and docksides, and from manufacturing and processing plants, so those operations make their own arrangements. The port has been building as well: the Port of Galveston opened Cruise Terminal 16 in November 2025, inside a converted cargo warehouse.

A dumpster brings a checklist of its own under Section 15-4. Each container needs a City permit that runs October 1 through September 30, and it has to carry the hauler’s name. It belongs behind a solid fence at least 5 feet tall on all sides, outside the required front setback, and at least 20 feet from a home of four units or fewer, a park, or a bus or trolley stop. Frontier’s 2 to 8-yard bins can go on a schedule of up to six pickups weekly.

The storm plan Galveston asks builders to sign

Galveston’s Building Division has a hurricane preparedness plan for construction sites, and the dumpster is part of it. On the small-project version, for buildings under 5,000 square feet of ground area and no more than two stories, any construction container has to stay on the property being built unless the neighbor agrees in writing. The plan’s readiness levels are keyed to how soon sustained winds above 60 mph are expected: first, scrap and rubbish get piled or containerized at the end of every workday; next, the builder gives the Building Division the names and contacts of the third-party contractors who will remove dumpsters, portable restrooms and fencing; then those come off the site.

The caution is earned. The National Hurricane Center puts Hurricane Ike’s landfall on the north end of Galveston Island on September 13, 2008, and NOAA’s storm records show a storm tide of 10 to 13 feet along most of the island. On June 17, 2026, the same records show, Tropical Storm Arthur brought a 57-knot gust (about 66 mph) to Scholes Field.

Over on the Bolivar Peninsula

Across Bolivar Roads, the peninsula is unincorporated Galveston County. The Census Bureau maps Port Bolivar, Crystal Beach, Gilchrist and High Island as one census-designated place, Bolivar Peninsula, with no city government, and the Handbook of Texas notes that by land the peninsula can be reached from the mainland only through southern Chambers County. Frontier already offers twice-weekly residential pickup there, along with custom bulk pickups and commercial service, and roll-off rentals on the Bolivar Peninsula cover homes and job sites alike.

Water does most of the damage out here. Ike’s highest surge came ashore on the Bolivar Peninsula and in parts of Chambers County, the National Hurricane Center found, and during Tropical Storm Alberto in June 2024, NOAA’s records note coastal flooding that made stretches of Highway 87 impassable at times. Burning the debris isn’t an option this fall: Galveston County’s commissioners prohibited outdoor burning in unincorporated areas on August 17, 2026, with the order set to run to November 15, 2026 unless the court ends it early.

Galveston dumpster rental questions

Can a roll-off sit in the street or alley outside a Galveston job?

Not without the City's permission. Section 15-109 of the code bars temporary haulers from setting containers on city or state right-of-way without a valid license to use, and it puts dumpsters on the customer's private property. If a demolition needs the sidewalk or street barricaded, the City's permit application calls for a separate temporary license to use the right-of-way. A driveway or an open stretch of the lot avoids both, as long as our truck has a hard, flat approach of at least 60 feet and 21 feet of clearance overhead.

Can an apartment or condo building on the island have its own dumpster?

Yes. Galveston's code counts a building with more than four units under one roof as commercial (Section 15-2), the same as a shop or a restaurant, and a 4-plex in a condominium complex whose association pays one water bill counts too. That puts these buildings under the commercial container rules in Section 15-4: a City permit, a 5-foot screening fence and the setback distances. Our dumpster service for condo and apartment buildings uses the same 2 to 8-yard bins, with lid locks available. Call (936) 258-9035.

Do you also work the mainland side of the causeway?

Yes. San Leon and Bacliff, on the mainland shore of Galveston Bay, are census-designated places rather than cities, so homes and job sites there can book a roll-off; our page on roll-offs around Dickinson, San Leon and Bacliff covers that stretch. For anywhere else across the causeway, call (936) 258-9035 with the address.
